Bernese Mountain Dog Age Calculator
How old is your Bernese Mountain Dog
in human years?
Bernese Mountain Dogs are usually quoted at 7 to 10 years. A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs measured a 10.1-year median, and this calculator uses that figure. Studies counting only dogs that had died put the typical age at death nearer 8.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).
When is a Bernese Mountain Dog considered a senior?
At about 7.6, based on the 2019 AAHA guideline that the senior stage is the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan, and a 10.1-year median. Studies that looked only at Bernese that had died found a typical age at death closer to 8, so it's reasonable to start talking about senior care with your vet from about 6 or 7.
How long do Bernese Mountain Dogs live?
- 10.1 years (median): McMillan et al. (2024) included 1,116 UK Bernese, 449 of which had died when the data was collected. The median for all dogs was 12.5.
- 7.7 years (median age at death): a 2026 UK study of giant breeds in everyday vet clinics, based on 63 Bernese that died.
- 8.4 years (median survival): a Swiss study that followed 389 club-registered Bernese born in 2001 and 2002 until almost all had died.
- 7 to 10 years (breed range): the range the American Kennel Club lists. It isn't a measured average.
The 10.1 figure is higher partly because it's a different kind of estimate: it accounts statistically for the many dogs still alive. We explain the gap, and what the studies found about cancer, in Bernese Mountain Dog lifespan: why cancer sets the pace.
Cancer in Bernese Mountain Dogs
In the Swiss study, cancer was recorded as the cause of death in 58.3% of the dogs, though many of those diagnoses weren't confirmed by a lab. One type, histiocytic sarcoma, is far more common in this breed than in most dogs. You can't screen for it at home, but tiredness, eating less, weight loss and pale gums were common signs in a study of 365 affected Bernese. Mention changes like these to your vet promptly.
How we calculate Bernese Mountain Dog age
- First two years: the formula from Wang et al. (2020, Cell Systems), human_age = 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31, the same for every dog. A 1-year-old is about 31 in human years and a 2-year-old about 42.
- After age 2: a steady pace set so a Bernese reaches 65 human years when it turns senior at about 7.6. That's about 4.1 human years per year, against 4.2 for a typical giant dog. It puts a Bernese at the 10.1-year median at about 75, the same point every size reaches at its typical lifespan in our main calculator.
Frequently asked questions

How long do Bernese Mountain Dogs live?
A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median of 10.1 years across 1,116 Bernese. Studies of dogs that had died found a median age at death of 7.7 years in UK vet clinics and 8.4 years in Switzerland. The American Kennel Club lists 7 to 10 years.
Why do Bernese Mountain Dogs have short lives?
Size is part of it, since bigger breeds generally live shorter lives. Cancer is the other big factor: it was recorded as the cause of death in 58.3% of Bernese in a Swiss study.
