German Shepherd age chart: German Shepherd years to human years

Find your German Shepherd's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog of 50 to 90 lbs, which turns senior at 8.9. The two columns run close together because the breed's senior age of about 8.5 is near that default: a 9-year-old is about 67 in human years, against 65 for a typical large dog.

How long do German Shepherds live?

The measured numbers sit below the range you'll usually see quoted.

Females and males

In the vet records study, females died at a median of 11.1 years and males at 9.7. This calculator uses one number for both, so if you have a male, read the result as a rough guide. More in German Shepherd lifespan: why mobility matters so much.

Why mobility matters in older German Shepherds

In UK vet records, the two most common recorded causes of death were musculoskeletal disorders (16.3%) and inability to stand (14.9%), and spinal cord disorders added another 13.6%. Osteoarthritis was recorded in 5.54% of the breed in a single year. Most of these dogs were euthanized, so comfort and movement often shape how long a German Shepherd's senior years last.
