Great Dane Lifespan: The Numbers and the Heart Question
Great Danes are usually said to live 7 to 10 years. A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median of 10.6 years across 1,986 of them, above that whole range. That's encouraging, but this breed has much thinner research than a Labrador, so we'll be clear about what's known and what isn't.
Key takeaways
- A median of 10.6 years was measured in UK Great Danes, against 12.5 for all dogs (McMillan et al. 2024).
- That's above most other giant breeds in the study, but it may be a high estimate.
- In a UK screening study of 107 Great Danes, 35.6% met the criteria for dilated cardiomyopathy.
- Male Great Danes were up to five times more likely than females to die of heart causes in Swedish insurance data.
- Great Danes turn senior at about 8 on the 10.6-year figure, but starting senior vet care earlier is reasonable.
Great Dane lifespan next to other giant breeds
How much should you trust 10.6?
It's the best large measurement we found, but read it with three cautions.
- Who was counted. The study pooled records from several kinds of UK sources, and only 864 of the 1,986 Great Danes had died when the data was collected. Median estimates like this one account for the living dogs statistically.
- Where. It's UK data. American Great Danes may differ.
- Vet clinic records run lower. A 2026 UK study of giant breeds under everyday vet care found a median age at death of 8.90 years among 113 Great Danes that died in 2019. It counts only dogs that died, so it tends to sit below a median that also accounts for living dogs, as with the German Shepherd.
The American Kennel Club's 7 to 10 years isn't a measured average, but we wouldn't treat it as wrong either. Many Great Danes do die in that window. A fair reading is that 10 is a good age for a Great Dane, and that some go well past it.
Great Danes and heart disease
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease where the heart muscle weakens and the heart enlarges. In a 2012 UK study of 107 owner-kept Great Danes, 35.6% met the criteria for DCM on a scoring system. That doesn't mean a third of all Great Danes have it, because these were dogs brought in for screening, not a sample of the whole breed. It does show the disease is worth taking seriously in this breed.
Sex seems to matter too. In a study of over 350,000 insured Swedish dogs, followed up to age 10, male Great Danes were as much as five times more likely than females to die of heart causes. That data is from 1995–2000, and insured dogs in one country aren't all dogs, but the direction is clear.
Ask your vet about heart checks, including whether and when a heart ultrasound makes sense. Tell them promptly if your dog is coughing, tiring easily, breathing faster at rest or collapses.
When is a Great Dane a senior?
On a 10.6-year median, at about 8, since the senior stage is the last 25% of expected lifespan. That's a little later than the 7.5 we use for giant dogs in general, as explained in how old is my dog in human years. Because the lifespan evidence is uncertain and the heart risk is real, we'd lean earlier: raise senior checkups with your vet from about 6 or 7.

Frequently asked questions
How long do Great Danes live?
A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs found a median of 10.6 years across 1,986 Great Danes. The American Kennel Club lists a range of 7 to 10 years.
Is 10 old for a Great Dane?
Yes. Ten is close to the UK median of 10.6 years and at the top of the American Kennel Club range.
What do Great Danes usually die from?
No large study ranks causes of death for Great Danes alone. Across all giant breeds in UK vet records, cancer, collapse and heart disorders were the most commonly recorded causes. Heart disease is a known concern for this breed, and Swedish insurance data found much higher heart-related death in males.
Do male or female Great Danes live longer?
We do not have good sex-specific lifespan figures. Swedish insurance data did find males up to five times more likely than females to die of heart causes up to age 10.
When is a Great Dane considered a senior?
From about 8 on a 10.6-year median, using AAHA’s last-25% rule. It is reasonable to raise senior checkups with your vet from about 6 or 7.
