When Is a Dog Considered a Senior? About 9 for Most Dogs

Most dogs become seniors at about 9 years old. Giant breeds get there sooner, at about 7.5. Those ages combine two sources: the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), which defines the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's expected lifespan, and a 2024 study of the lifespans of 584,734 dogs in the UK. The study's authors note that their results describe UK dogs, so treat these ages as estimates. Your vet may set a different age for your dog.

Key takeaways

  • AAHA doesn't set a fixed senior age. It defines the senior stage as the last 25% of expected lifespan (Creevy et al. 2019).
  • Applied to measured lifespans, that's about 9.6 for small dogs, 9.4 for medium, 8.9 for large and 7.5 for giant breeds.
  • Many charts put small dogs at 10 to 12. The lifespan data doesn't support a gap that wide between sizes.
  • Lifespans vary far more between breeds than between size groups. A French Bulldog turns senior at about 7.4, a Poodle at about 10.5.
  • For senior dogs, AAHA recommends a vet exam at least every 6 months.

Senior age by size

We took the median lifespan for each size group and started the senior stage at 75% of it. A median is the age half of the dogs live past. AAHA itself leaves the lifespan estimate to the vet team, based on the dog's breed and health, so these are starting points rather than rules.

Small, medium and large: purebred medians from McMillan et al. (2024), which reports males and females separately, hence the ranges. The study groups breeds by Kennel Club size class rather than weight, so the weight ranges here are a rough guide. It has no giant group, so for giants we picked 10 breeds commonly considered giant and used the median of their lifespans in the same study: Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Leonberger, Irish Wolfhound, Neapolitan Mastiff, Great Pyrenees and Scottish Deerhound.

Why many charts say 10 to 12 for small dogs

Many of the senior dog age charts we found online put small dogs at 10 to 12 years and giant dogs at 5 to 7. Those charts assume small dogs live much longer than big ones, often into their mid-teens. Measured lifespans tell a different story. In the 2024 study, small purebreds had a median of 12.7 to 12.8 years and large purebreds 11.8 to 12.0, a gap of about a year or less.

Size still matters at the extremes. Giant breeds really do live shorter lives, and the shortest-lived breeds are mostly giant or flat-faced. But for small, medium and large dogs, the senior stage starts between about 8.9 and 9.6.

Until November 2026, our own dog age calculator also used the wider gaps (12 for small dogs, 10 medium, 8 large, 6.5 giant). We've since moved it to the numbers in this article.

Median lifespans from McMillan et al. (2024). Senior age is 75% of the median, applying AAHA's last-25% definition (2019). UK data. For other breeds, see the lifespan of all 155 breeds and multiply by 0.75.

Look at the small breeds. A Yorkshire Terrier or Miniature Schnauzer turns senior at about 10, while a Pug, also a small breed, gets there at about 8.7. Size alone would put all three at the same age.

What changes when your dog becomes a senior

AAHA's guidelines recommend a few changes once a dog reaches the senior stage:

  • More frequent checkups. A vet exam at least every 6 months, with blood and urine screening every 6 to 12 months.
  • Watching for changes in thinking and behavior. AAHA lists routine checks for cognitive changes and anxiety in senior dogs.
  • Small changes at home. Senior dogs can lose some mobility, vision, hearing and mental sharpness. AAHA suggests better grip on floors and stairs, fewer stairs where possible, and less clutter for dogs that seem confused.
  • Care around hearing loss. A dog that can't hear well may not notice cars coming, and may snap if startled by a person or pet it didn't hear.

The senior stage is a planning point, not a diagnosis. Many 9-year-old dogs are still in great shape. Ask your vet when they'd like to start senior checkups for your dog.

Frequently asked questions

When is a dog considered a senior?

In the last 25% of its expected lifespan, according to the 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines. Based on median lifespans from a study of 584,734 dogs, that's about 9.4 to 9.6 years for small and medium dogs, about 8.9 for large dogs and about 7.5 for giant breeds. These are estimates from UK dogs, and your vet may set a different age for your dog.

Is a 7-year-old dog a senior?

For most dogs, not yet. Giant breeds reach the senior stage at roughly 7 to 8, and short-lived breeds such as the French Bulldog and Bulldog at about 7.4. Most other dogs turn senior closer to 9.

Is a 10-year-old small dog a senior?

Usually. Small purebreds had a median lifespan of 12.7 to 12.8 years in the 2024 study, so the senior stage starts at about 9.6. Long-lived small breeds like the Yorkshire Terrier turn senior at about 10, and a few, such as the Papillon, closer to 11.

When is a large dog considered a senior?

At about 8.9 years for a typical large dog, based on a median lifespan of 11.8 to 12.0 years. Labradors and Golden Retrievers live longer than that and turn senior closer to 10.

When are mixed-breed dogs considered seniors?

At about 9 years. Crossbreeds had a median lifespan of 12.0 years in the 2024 study, and the last 25% of that starts at 9.

What changes when a dog becomes a senior?

AAHA recommends vet exams at least every 6 months, blood and urine screening every 6 to 12 months, and routine checks for changes in thinking and behavior. Senior dogs can lose some mobility, vision, hearing and mental sharpness, so small changes at home, like better grip on floors, can help.
