French Bulldog Age Calculator

How old is your French Bulldog
in human years?

Frenchies have a shorter median lifespan than most dogs, so after age 2 they age faster than a typical medium dog. This calculator uses the breed's own lifespan from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs.

Your dog is in the long middle stretch of adulthood. Continue annual wellness exams with baseline bloodwork, monitor for subtle weight or behavior changes, and watch for early signs of chronic conditions such as dental disease, arthritis, or weight gain (AAHA 2019).

An estimate based on Wang et al. (2020) for the first two years, then scaled so a French Bulldog turns senior at about 7.3 years, the last quarter of its 9.8-year median lifespan (McMillan et al. 2024). Individual dogs vary. Not veterinary advice.

French Bulldog age chart: Frenchie years to human years

Find your Frenchie's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a 20โ€“50 lb dog, the one the main calculator uses. Both start at the same point, but because French Bulldogs have a shorter median lifespan, each year after age 2 counts for more: a 10-year-old Frenchie is about 76 in human years, against 65 for a typical medium dog.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).

When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?

At about 7 years old. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines don't set a fixed senior age. They define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan. The largest study of UK dogs so far put the French Bulldog's median lifespan at 9.8 years, and 75% of 9.8 is about 7.3. That is well before the age of 10 that the same guidelines' size bands would give a 20โ€“50 lb dog.

Senior doesn't mean sick. It's the stage where vets usually move from yearly to twice-yearly checkups, so changes are caught early. Ask your vet when they'd like to start for your dog.

How long do French Bulldogs live?

You'll see figures from about 4.5 to 12 years. Most of that gap comes from how each study measured lifespan.

For your own Frenchie, the 9.8-year median is the more useful number. The breed's flat face is part of the story: in McMillan's data, flat-faced (brachycephalic) purebreds had a median of 11.2 years, against 12.8 for breeds with a medium-length muzzle. We go through both studies in French Bulldog lifespan: do Frenchies really live only 4.5 years?

How we calculate French Bulldog age

Why not use the medium-dog numbers? Size bands average across many breeds, and the French Bulldog is one of the clearest cases of a breed that falls outside its band. Using the breed's own lifespan keeps the senior age and the human-age numbers consistent with each other.

Frequently asked questions

How old is a 5-year-old French Bulldog in human years?

About 55. By the same method, a typical medium dog would be about 51. The chart above shows every age from 1 to 16.

How old is a 10-year-old French Bulldog in human years?

About 76. Ten is past the breed's 9.8-year median lifespan, so a 10-year-old Frenchie has already outlived about half of the French Bulldogs in the largest UK study.

When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?

From about age 7. AAHA treats the last 25% of a dog's expected lifespan as the senior stage, and the median lifespan for French Bulldogs is 9.8 years.

How long do French Bulldogs live?

The largest study, of 584,734 UK dogs, found a median lifespan of 9.8 years for French Bulldogs, against 12.5 for all dogs. The often-quoted 4.5-year figure comes from a smaller study whose authors say the breed's fast rise in popularity skewed it toward young dogs.

Does the "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule work for Frenchies?

No. A 1-year-old French Bulldog is already about 31 in human years. After age 2, Frenchies add about 4.3 human years for each calendar year.
