French Bulldog Lifespan: Do Frenchies Really Live Only 4.5 Years?

The best current estimate is that French Bulldogs live a median of 9.8 years: half live longer, half don't get that far. That comes from the largest study of UK dog lifespans so far, which covered 584,734 dogs. You may also have seen a much scarier number, 4.5 years. That one is real too, but it measures something different, and the researchers who published it explain why it runs low.

Key takeaways

  • French Bulldogs have a median lifespan of 9.8 years, against 12.5 for dogs overall (McMillan et al. 2024).
  • The 4.5-year figure is a "life expectancy at birth" from about 230 Frenchies that died at UK vet practices in 2016–2020. The breed's boom in popularity meant most of those dogs were young.
  • That study still found a high death rate in young Frenchies, about 13% a year in their first two years, and its authors point to problems linked to the flat face.
  • With a 9.8-year median, a French Bulldog reaches the senior stage at about 7.

Where the 4.5-year figure comes from

In 2022, researchers at the Royal Veterinary College's VetCompass program built life tables for UK dogs, the same kind of table used to estimate human life expectancy. They used records of 30,563 dogs that died at UK primary-care vet practices between 2016 and 2020, and made tables for 18 breeds. The French Bulldog came out last, with a life expectancy at birth of 4.53 years, based on about 230 Frenchies.

A life table like this takes the share of dogs that died at each age during a few years, and assumes a newborn puppy will face those same odds all its life. That works when a population is stable. French Bulldogs in the UK weren't: Kennel Club registrations rose from 2,771 in 2011 to 39,266 in 2020. During the study window, most Frenchies alive were young, so deaths of young dogs carried a lot of weight and there were few old Frenchies to balance them. The authors say this themselves. They note that tables like theirs are sensitive to fad-driven swings in a breed's popularity, and that the breed samples were small.

Not all of it is a quirk of the method, though. In the same table, a French Bulldog had about a 13% chance of dying in each of its first two years, a high rate for dogs that young. The authors link this early-life risk partly to disorders that come with the breed's flat face.

Where the 9.8-year figure comes from

The 2024 study, led by Kirsten McMillan at the charity Dogs Trust, pooled data from 18 sources, including breed registries, veterinary groups, pet insurers and animal charities. It covered 584,734 UK dogs, 284,734 of which had died, and counted living dogs as well as dead ones. For a breed whose numbers changed so quickly, that gives a steadier picture than a few years of deaths alone.

Half of the French Bulldogs in that data lived past 9.8 years. The figure for Bulldogs was the same, 9.8, and Pugs came in at 11.6. Across all breeds and crossbreeds, the median was 12.5.

Why French Bulldogs live shorter lives

The flat face is the clearest pattern. In McMillan's data, flat-faced (brachycephalic) purebreds had a median lifespan of 11.2 years, against 12.8 for purebreds with a medium-length muzzle and 12.1 for long-muzzled breeds. The French Bulldog sits below even the flat-faced average. Teng's team, as above, points to flat-face-related disorders for the high death rate in young Frenchies.

Your vet is the right person to talk to about your own dog's breathing, weight and spine. If your Frenchie snores loudly even at rest, struggles in the heat or tires quickly on walks, mention it at the next checkup rather than putting it down to the breed.

Do female French Bulldogs live longer than males?

We don't have a reliable answer for French Bulldogs alone. The 2024 study didn't publish a male and female split for each breed. Across all 584,734 dogs, females lived slightly longer, a median of 12.7 years against 12.4 for males, and that held for purebreds and crossbreeds.

What this means for your Frenchie

  • Plan for senior care earlier. AAHA treats the last quarter of a dog's expected lifespan as the senior stage. With a 9.8-year median, that starts at about 7 for a French Bulldog, three years earlier than the size-based guideline for a 20–50 lb dog.
  • Read the median as a midpoint, not a deadline. Half of the Frenchies in the study lived longer than 9.8 years.
  • Convert your Frenchie's age with the breed in mind. On the same scale, a 7-year-old French Bulldog is about 64 in human years and a 10-year-old about 76. Our French Bulldog age calculator does the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How long do French Bulldogs live?

A median of 9.8 years, according to a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs. The median for all dogs in that study was 12.5 years.

Do French Bulldogs really only live 4.5 years?

No. 4.5 years is a life expectancy at birth from a 2022 study of about 230 French Bulldogs that died in 2016–2020. Its authors note that the breed's rapid rise in popularity meant most Frenchies at the time were young, which pulls that kind of estimate down.

When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?

From about 7 years old. That's the last 25% of a 9.8-year median lifespan, which is how AAHA defines the senior stage.

What is old for a French Bulldog?

A French Bulldog over 10 has outlived about half of the breed, based on the 9.8-year median.

Do female French Bulldogs live longer?

There's no published breed-specific figure. Across all dogs in the 2024 UK study, females lived a little longer: a median of 12.7 years against 12.4 for males.
