Labrador Retriever Age Calculator

How old is your Labrador
in human years?

Labs outlive the average dog despite their size, so the usual large-dog numbers age them too fast. This calculator uses the breed's own lifespan from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs, including 43,428 Labradors.

Labrador Retriever age chart: Labrador years to human years

Find your Lab's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog of 50 to 90 lbs. It turns senior at 8.9, almost a year before a Labrador's breed-based senior age: a 9-year-old Lab is about 63 in human years, against 65 for a typical large dog.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).

When is a Labrador considered a senior?

At about 9 years and 10 months. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan, not a fixed age. The Labrador's median lifespan is 13.1 years, and 75% of that is 9.8. Our main calculator uses 8.9 for all dogs of 50 to 90 lbs, a little early for this breed.

Your vet may still suggest starting senior checkups sooner, especially for a dog with stiff joints or extra weight. Ask what they'd recommend for yours.

How long do Labs live?

The studies land between about 12 and 13 years, depending on what they measure.

Does coat color change the numbers?

It did in one study. Chocolate Labs died at a median of 10.7 years, against 12.1 for black and yellow Labs combined. That rests on 34 chocolate dogs, so treat it as a signal, not a rule, and this calculator doesn't adjust for color. We go through the details in Labrador lifespan: why chocolate Labs lived shorter lives.

This calculator uses one number for all Labs. Chocolate Labs lived shorter lives in one UK study, but with only 34 dogs that figure is too uncertain to build into an age estimate.
