Yorkshire Terrier Age Calculator

How old is your Yorkie
in human years?

Yorkshire Terriers outlive the average dog, but they don't reach the very long lifespans assumed for small dogs in general. This calculator uses the breed's own lifespan from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs.

Your dog is in the long middle stretch of adulthood. Continue annual wellness exams with baseline bloodwork, monitor for subtle weight or behavior changes, and watch for early signs of chronic conditions such as dental disease, arthritis, or weight gain (AAHA 2019).

An estimate based on Wang et al. (2020) for the first two years, then scaled so a Yorkshire Terrier turns senior at about 10 years, the last quarter of its 13.3-year median lifespan (McMillan et al. 2024). Individual dogs vary. Not veterinary advice.

Yorkshire Terrier age chart: Yorkie years to human years

Find your Yorkie's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog under 20 lbs, the one the main calculator uses. Both start at the same point. That standard estimate turns senior at 12, two years later than a Yorkie's breed-based senior age, so each year after age 2 counts for a little more here: a 10-year-old Yorkie is about 65 in human years, against 60 for a typical small dog.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).

When is a Yorkshire Terrier considered a senior?

At about 10 years old. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines don't set a fixed senior age. They define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan. The largest study of UK dogs so far put the Yorkshire Terrier's median lifespan at 13.3 years, and 75% of 13.3 is just under 10. That is two years before the age of 12 our main calculator uses for dogs under 20 lbs.

Senior doesn't mean sick. It's the stage where vets usually move from yearly to twice-yearly checkups, so changes are caught early. Ask your vet when they'd like to start for your dog.

How long do Yorkshire Terriers live?

Published figures run from about 11 to 15 years, and the numbers from different methods sit close together.

In the same life tables, a Yorkie's remaining life expectancy fell below 1.5 years between the ages of 14 and 15. A median is a midpoint, not a limit, so a healthy Yorkie can pass these ages.

Why teeth matter for an aging Yorkie

Very small dogs tend to need more help with their teeth as they get older. In a US study of more than 3 million vet records, breeds under about 14 lbs were up to five times more likely to be diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease than giant breeds. Age and time since the last dental cleaning were also risk factors. That finding covers very small breeds as a group, not Yorkies alone, but a Yorkie's weight of about 7 lbs puts it in that group. Your vet can check your dog's teeth at each visit and tell you when a cleaning makes sense.

How we calculate Yorkshire Terrier age

Why does a long-lived breed come out older than the small-dog column? That column is a broad default that assumes a senior age of 12, which matches a lifespan of about 16 years. A Yorkie's measured median is 13.3 years, so using the breed's own number moves its senior age earlier. It doesn't mean Yorkies age badly. They still live longer than dogs overall.

Frequently asked questions

How old is a 5-year-old Yorkie in human years?

About 51. By the same method, a typical small dog would be about 49. The chart above shows every age from 1 to 16.

How old is a 10-year-old Yorkie in human years?

About 65. Ten is around when a Yorkshire Terrier enters the senior stage, based on the breed's 13.3-year median lifespan.

How old is a 15-year-old Yorkie in human years?

How long do Yorkies live?

The largest study, of 584,734 UK dogs, found a median lifespan of 13.3 years for Yorkshire Terriers, against 12.5 for all dogs. A separate UK study estimated a life expectancy at birth of 12.5 years, second highest of the 18 breeds it covered.

Does the "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule work for Yorkies?

No. A 1-year-old Yorkie is already about 31 in human years. After age 2, Yorkies add about 2.9 human years for each calendar year.
