Golden Retriever Age Calculator
How old is your Golden Retriever
in human years?
Golden Retriever lifespan figures vary more than most, from about 9 to 13 years, depending on which dogs were studied. This calculator uses the 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs, including 11,506 Goldens.

Golden Retriever age chart: Golden years to human years
Find your Golden's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog of 50 to 90 lbs. It turns senior at 8.9, about a year before the breed-based age used here: a 9-year-old Golden is about 62 in human years, against 65 for a typical large dog.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).
When is a Golden Retriever considered a senior?
At about 9.9 years, based on the 2019 AAHA guideline that the senior stage is the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan. But this is one breed where starting earlier makes sense. Goldens have a high reported cancer risk, so ask your vet about twice-yearly checkups before your dog reaches 9.9, not after.
How long do Golden Retrievers live?
It depends on who was counted.
- 13.2 years (median): McMillan et al. (2024) combined records for 584,734 UK dogs, including 11,506 Goldens. The median for all dogs was 12.5.
- 9.15 years (median age at death): Kent et al. (2018) looked at 652 Goldens that had a necropsy at a US academic veterinary center. The authors note that a referral hospital may see sicker dogs than a typical clinic.
- 10 to 12 years (breed range): the range the American Kennel Club lists. It isn't a measured average.
We use 13.2 because it comes from the broadest group of dogs. It's from the UK, so American Goldens may differ. Golden Retriever lifespan: why the numbers differ so much explains the gap.
How we calculate Golden Retriever age
- First two years: the formula from Wang et al. (2020, Cell Systems), human_age = 16 ร ln(dog_age) + 31, the same for every dog. A 1-year-old is about 31 in human years and a 2-year-old about 42.
- After age 2: a steady pace set so a Golden Retriever reaches 65 human years when it turns senior at about 9.9. That's about 2.9 human years per year, against 3.3 for a typical large dog. It puts a Golden Retriever at the 13.2-year median at about 75, the same point every size reaches at its typical lifespan in our main calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 5-year-old Golden Retriever in human years?
About 51. A typical large dog would be about 52. The chart above shows every age from 1 to 16.
How old is a 10-year-old Golden Retriever in human years?
About 65. Ten is just past the age of about 9.9 when a Golden enters the senior stage on this estimate.
When is a Golden Retriever considered a senior?
From about 9.9 using AAHA's last-25% rule and a 13.2-year median lifespan. Ask your vet whether to start senior checkups earlier, given the breed's reported cancer risk.
How long do Golden Retrievers live?
A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs found a median of 13.2 years. A US academic hospital study found 9.15 years, though referral hospitals may see sicker dogs.
Why is your number higher than the 10 to 12 years I usually see?
The 10 to 12 years is a general breed range from the American Kennel Club. The 13.2 is a measured median from UK records, and American Goldens may not match it.
