Start with the amount on your food's label and use this as a cross-check. The formula can run high for some small breeds. Adjust every couple of weeks so you can feel the ribs without seeing them. Not veterinary advice.
Puppy calorie chart by age and size
Typical calories per day for a puppy growing along the median curve for its size. Each column uses an example adult weight; heavier or lighter puppies within a size need proportionally more or less.
| Age | Small ~12 lb adult | Medium ~26 lb adult | Large ~50 lb adult | X‑Large ~75 lb adult | Giant ~110 lb adult |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 wks 2 mo | 400 | 620 | 870 | 1,160 | 1,380 |
| 10 wks | 430 | 690 | 1,020 | 1,350 | 1,650 |

| 16 wks 4 mo | 480 | 840 | 1,330 | 1,760 | 2,280 |
| 20 wks 5 mo | 500 | 880 | 1,420 | 1,900 | 2,510 |
| 26 wks 6 mo | 500 | 900 | 1,470 | 1,980 | 2,640 |
| 36 wks 8 mo | 500 | 890 | 1,440 | 1,970 | 2,630 |
| 52 wks 12 mo | 480 | 860 | 1,400 | 1,910 | 2,540 |
Two things surprise most owners. Daily calories keep rising until about 6β7 months, even though growth is already slowing. And per pound, a young puppy needs far more than an adult: a 10-week-old large-breed puppy eats about 90 kcal per pound, a 1-year-old about 30. For why that happens, see puppy growth spurts.
How much to feed a puppy
Puppy food labels give a range by weight, and the range is wide because puppies differ. This calculator narrows it using your puppy's age and expected adult size. Use it like this:
- Start with the label for your puppy's current weight and age.
- Cross-check with the calories here. If the two are far apart, start in between.
- Split the day's amount across the meals below, and count treats (keep them under 10% of calories).
- Weigh every 1β2 weeks and check body condition. You should feel the ribs easily without seeing them. Add or remove about 10% if your puppy is getting thin or round.
Cups are only as accurate as the calorie number on your bag. A level, measured cup matters: an overfilled "cup" can easily be 20% more food.
How many times a day should a puppy eat?
| Age | Small & toy under 20 lbs | Medium to giant 20+ lbs |
|---|---|---|
| 8β12 weeks | 4 (toy: 4β5) | 4 |
| 3β4 months | 4 | 3 |
| 4β6 months | 3 | 3 |
| 6β8 months | 3 | 2 |
| 8β12 months | 2 | 2 |
Sources differ a little on exact ages (some start at three meals at 8 weeks, and some move to two meals from 4 months), so the table follows the middle of veterinary guidance: about four meals until 3 months, three until 6 months, then two. Small and especially toy puppies stay on more, smaller meals for longer, because their tiny bodies can't store much energy and long gaps can cause low blood sugar. How this calculator works
Daily calories come from the growth equation in the National Research Council's Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats (2006), which most puppy feeding guides are based on: 130 Γ weight0.75 Γ 3.2 Γ (eβ0.87p β 0.1), with weight in kg and p the share of adult weight already reached.
To find p and to project the coming weeks, we use the same growth curves as our puppy weight calculator, fitted to the public Salt et al. (2017) dataset of more than 100,000 healthy puppies seen at Banfield Pet Hospitals. Cups divide calories by the kcal per cup you enter, or by 400 if you leave it empty. Meals per day follow the schedule above.
The NRC equation is an average. A study of Yorkshire Terrier puppies found it overestimated their needs, especially early on (Alexander et al., 2017), and activity, coat, temperature and neutering all shift real needs. That's why body condition, not the number, has the final say.
Frequently asked questions
How many cups should I feed my puppy?
Divide the daily calories by the kcal per cup on your food's bag. A 12-week-old Labrador at 16 lbs needs about 1,250 kcal a day, which is about 3 cups of a 400 kcal/cup food, split into 4 meals until 3 months, then 3.
Why does my puppy need more food than an adult dog of the same weight?
Growing takes energy. Early on, a puppy needs about twice the calories per pound of an adult of the same weight. That extra drops off as the puppy approaches its adult size.
When should I stop increasing my puppy's food?
For most puppies, daily calories peak around 6β7 months and then level off or drop slightly, even though the puppy is still gaining weight. Keep adjusting by body condition rather than following the scale alone.
Is it bad to overfeed a large-breed puppy?
Yes. Growing too fast is linked to joint and bone problems in large and giant breeds. Feed a large-breed puppy food, measure meals instead of free feeding, and keep your puppy lean.
When should I switch my puppy to 2 meals a day?
Usually between 4 and 6 months; around 6 months is a safe default for most puppies, and closer to 8 months for small and toy breeds. Switch gradually and keep the daily total the same.
Do treats count?
Yes. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories and take them out of meals on heavy training days.
