Boxer Lifespan: Do White Boxers Live Shorter Lives?
Boxers live a median of 11.3 years, according to a 2024 study of UK dogs, which included 11,294 of them. If you've heard that white Boxers don't live as long, the best evidence we have says otherwise: in UK vet records, white Boxers lived as long as other Boxers.
Key takeaways
- The median Boxer lifespan is 11.3 years, against 12.5 for all dogs (McMillan et al. 2024).
- In UK vet records, white Boxers died at a median of 10.55 years and others at 10.38, with no significant difference.
- Males and females also matched: 10.53 and 10.41 years.
- Cancer and mass lesions were common recorded causes of death.
- A Boxer reaches the senior stage at about 8 and a half.
How long do Boxers live?
| Source | What it measured | Boxer |
|---|---|---|
| McMillan et al. 2024584,734 UK dogs, 11,294 Boxers | Median lifespan | 11.3 years95% CI 11.3–11.5 |
| O'Neill et al. 2023335 UK Boxer deaths | Median age at death | 10.46 yearsMiddle half: 9.00–11.98 |
| Teng et al. 2022About 836 UK Boxers | Life expectancy at birth | 10.04 years95% CI 9.85–10.21 |
| American Kennel Club | General breed range | 10–12 years |
For once, the measured numbers and the general breed range broadly agree. The oldest Boxer in the vet records study was 18, far beyond the norm.
Do white Boxers live shorter lives?
Not in the 2023 UK vet records study. It's the same picture for overall health: white and non-white Boxers had about the same number of recorded disorders per year. The authors found little evidence of a major overall health difference. About 1 in 10 Boxers in the study were white.
That matters because white Boxers have a poor reputation. They don't meet the UK Kennel Club breed standard, and the authors note they were historically often culled. White coloring has also long been linked to congenital deafness, so a hearing check is still sensible if you have a white puppy.
The two differences to know about
White Boxers weren't identical on everything. Two causes of death showed up more often among them:
| Cause of death | White Boxers | Other Boxers |
|---|---|---|
| Brain disorder | 18.18% | 7.84% |
| Enteropathy (gut disease) | 6.82% | 1.49% |
With only 43 or so white Boxer deaths, these percentages come from a handful of dogs each, so they're a prompt for more research, not a reason to worry. They didn't add up to a shorter life overall.
What do Boxers usually die from?
Of 346 deaths, 21.10% had no recorded cause. Among those that did, the most common were:
- Cancer, 12.43%: a median age of 9.45 years
- Brain disorder, 9.54%: 11.01 years
- Mass lesion, 8.38%: lumps without a confirmed diagnosis, 10.95 years
- Collapse, 6.65%: 11.61 years
Most of these dogs, 93.11%, were euthanized. Since some "mass" cases may have been cancers never fully diagnosed, as the authors note, cancer's true share is probably higher. Ask your vet about any new lump.
Everyday health issues in Boxers
The most common diagnoses across 3,219 Boxers were ear inflammation (7.15%), epulis (5.84%), corneal ulcers (5.00%) and gum disease (4.63%). Two of those stand out as Boxer problems: epulis is a growth on the gums, and corneal ulcers are sores on the surface of the eye. A squinting or watery eye needs a prompt vet visit, and it's worth lifting your Boxer's lip now and then to look at the gums.
When is a Boxer a senior?
At about 8 and a half, the last 25% of an 11.3-year median lifespan. That's a little before the 8.9 we use for large dogs in general, as explained in how old is my dog in human years. The German Shepherd has the same median, though its sex gap and causes of death look quite different.

Do white Boxers have shorter lifespans?
Not in a UK vet records study. White Boxers died at a median of 10.55 years and others at 10.38, and the difference was not statistically significant.
Are white Boxers less healthy?
