Chihuahua Lifespan: Why You'll See Both 7.9 and 14–16 Years

The best current estimate is that Chihuahuas live a median of 11.8 years: half live longer, half don't get that far. That comes from the largest study of UK dog lifespans so far, which covered 584,734 dogs, including 10,788 Chihuahuas. Other sources will tell you 7.9 years, or 14 to 16. Those numbers aren't all wrong. They measure different things, and the Chihuahua is a breed where that matters more than usual.

Key takeaways

  • Chihuahuas have a median lifespan of 11.8 years, against 12.5 for dogs overall (McMillan et al. 2024).
  • The 7.9-year figure is a life expectancy at birth, pulled down by deaths at young ages in a breed that was booming in popularity (Teng et al. 2022).
  • The 14 to 16 years often quoted is the AKC's general breed range, not a measured average.
  • Heart disease was the most common recorded cause of death in UK vet records (O'Neill et al. 2020).
  • With an 11.8-year median, a Chihuahua reaches the senior stage at about 9.

Why some numbers are so low

The Chihuahua went through a popularity boom. In UK vet records, Chihuahuas rose from 1.01% of dogs born in 2005 to 5.35% of dogs born in 2016, and the median living Chihuahua was just 2.8 years old. When most of a breed is young, few old dogs are around to die during a study, so the deaths on record skew young. The authors of that study warn against reading its 8.2-year median age at death as the breed's lifespan.

The same problem affects life tables like the one behind the 7.9-year figure. McMillan's team counted living dogs as well as dead ones, which is why we use 11.8 as the main number. For the same reason, French Bulldogs show an even bigger gap, as we explain in our French Bulldog lifespan guide.

A breed with a wide spread

Not all of the low figures are a statistical quirk. Teng's life tables show Chihuahuas with a higher risk of death than dogs overall at most ages up to about 13, and much higher before age 4. Yet the breed also reached a remaining life expectancy of 1.5 years later than any other breed in the study, at age 15 to 16. The authors read this as a high variation in lifespan: more early deaths, and also dogs that live a very long time.

That may be why owners' experience often sounds so different from the statistics. A Chihuahua reaching 15 is believable. It just isn't the typical outcome across the breed.

What do Chihuahuas usually die from?

The UK vet records study had 80 Chihuahua deaths with a recorded cause, a small sample, so treat the exact percentages with some care. The most common groups were:

  • Heart disease: 18.8%
  • Lower respiratory tract disorders: 16.3%
  • Traumatic injury: 13.8%

The trauma figure stands out for a dog this small, and it's the one owners have the most direct control over. Think about falls from furniture or arms, doors, and encounters with larger dogs. The study's authors also say the breed's popularity raises concern about impulse purchases by owners with limited experience of dog care.

Do female Chihuahuas live longer than males?

In that same study, by a wide margin: females died at a median of 10.2 years and males at 6.9. Be careful with the size of that gap, though. It comes from just 93 deaths in a young population, and the authors call for follow-up as these dogs age. Across all dogs in McMillan's data, the gap was far smaller, at 12.7 years for females against 12.4 for males.

Do teacup Chihuahuas live shorter lives?

We couldn't find a study that measures it. "Teacup" isn't a category in these lifespan studies, and the AKC breed standard only says a Chihuahua should not exceed six pounds. In the UK records, the median adult weighed about 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg), as we break down in how much a Chihuahua should weigh. If your dog is well below that, ask your vet what to watch for.

Can a Chihuahua live to 20?

It would be very unusual. The oldest Chihuahuas in the UK vet records study died at 17.0 years, and across all dogs in McMillan's data, 95% had died by about 18.3 years. We found no verified 20-year-old Chihuahua in the studies we read.

What this means for your Chihuahua

  • Plan for senior care at about 9. AAHA treats the last quarter of a dog's expected lifespan as the senior stage. With an 11.8-year median, that starts about three years earlier than the age of 12 we use for small dogs in general.
  • Ask about the heart and the teeth. Heart disease topped the causes of death, and periodontal (gum) disease was the most common diagnosis, affecting 13.5% of Chihuahuas in one year. Heart murmurs were more common in males.
  • Protect a very small body. Traumatic injury was the third most common recorded cause of death.
  • Convert your Chihuahua's age with the breed in mind. On our scale, a 9-year-old Chihuahua is about 66 in human years and a 14-year-old about 82. Our Chihuahua age calculator does the rest, and our guide explains how dog years work.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Chihuahuas live?

A median of 11.8 years, according to a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs that included 10,788 Chihuahuas. The median for all dogs in that study was 12.5 years.

Why do some sources say Chihuahuas live 14 to 16 years?

That's the general range listed by the American Kennel Club, not a measured average. Some Chihuahuas do reach those ages, but the large UK studies found a lower typical figure once deaths at younger ages are counted.

What do Chihuahuas usually die from?

In a UK vet records study, the most common recorded causes were heart disease (18.8%), lower respiratory tract disorders (16.3%) and traumatic injury (13.8%), based on 80 deaths with a known cause.

Can a Chihuahua live to 20?

It would be very unusual. The oldest Chihuahuas in the UK vet records study died at 17, and we found no verified 20-year-old Chihuahua in the studies we read.

Do female Chihuahuas live longer than males?

In one UK study, yes: females died at a median of 10.2 years and males at 6.9. That's based on just 93 deaths in a young population, so the exact gap may change as more data comes in.

Do teacup Chihuahuas have a shorter lifespan?

We couldn't find a study that measures it. "Teacup" isn't a category in these studies. The AKC standard only says a Chihuahua should not exceed six pounds.

When is a Chihuahua considered a senior?

From about 9 years old. That's the last 25% of an 11.8-year median lifespan, which is how AAHA defines the senior stage.
