How Much Should a Chihuahua Weigh? What Real Dogs Weigh

The American Kennel Club says an adult Chihuahua shouldn't weigh more than 6 pounds, but many pet Chihuahuas weigh more. In UK vet records covering 11,647 Chihuahuas, the median adult weighed 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg), and about three in four weighed at least 6 lbs. So a number above 6 doesn't tell you your dog is overweight. It may only mean they wouldn't qualify for the show ring.

Key takeaways

  • The AKC standard is a show limit: any dog over 6 lbs is disqualified from conformation shows. It isn't a health target.
  • In UK vet records, median adult weight was 8.2 lbs for males and 7.1 lbs for females.
  • The middle half of adults weighed about 6 to 9.5 lbs. These records include non-pedigree dogs.
  • Weight alone can't tell you if your dog is overweight. Your dog's body shape is a better guide.
  • Puppies do most of their growing in the first year, but the records show weight rising until about age 4.

What adult Chihuahuas actually weigh

These figures come from a 2020 study of UK veterinary records, measured in dogs aged 18 months or older.

Males8.2 lbs3.7 kg6.4–10.1 lbs2.9–4.6 kg
Females7.1 lbs3.2 kg5.7–8.8 lbs2.6–4.0 kg

Here is how the adults spread out. The study reported these groups in kilograms, so the pounds are rounded.

The full range ran from 1.8 to 21.6 lbs (0.8 to 9.8 kg). The heaviest of those dogs may not be typical Chihuahuas at all, for the reasons below.

Why real dogs weigh more than the breed standard

The AKC standard describes the show ideal: "a well balanced little dog not to exceed 6 pounds." The UK Kennel Club sets a similar limit of 2.7 kg and prefers 1.8 to 2.7 kg. Most Chihuahuas aren't bred or kept for showing.

The study's authors offer no single explanation for the gap. Their dogs were a mix of pedigree and non-pedigree Chihuahuas, and some of the extra weight may be body fat. They had no body condition scores, so they couldn't say how much obesity contributed. These are also UK dogs, so American Chihuahuas could differ.

Is my Chihuahua's weight normal?

These comparisons show how common a weight is. They can't tell you whether it's healthy for your dog.

  • Under 4.4 lbs: about 1 in 13 adult females and 1 in 27 males. If your adult dog is this small, ask your vet what to watch for. We cover the "teacup" label in our Chihuahua lifespan guide.
  • 7 lbs: very ordinary, and close to the median for females.
  • 10 lbs: on the heavy side but not rare. About a quarter of adult males weighed more than 10.1 lbs. A 10-lb female is less common, since three in four females weighed 8.8 lbs or less.
  • 15 lbs: unusual. Only 3.5% of adult females and 7.3% of males reached even 13.2 lbs. Your dog could be overweight or a Chihuahua mix, or simply be a big dog. A vet can help you tell which.

How to tell if your Chihuahua is overweight

Look at your dog's shape. The WSAVA body condition chart, from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, describes three checks:

  • Ribs: at an ideal weight you can feel them easily under a thin fat covering. It's a warning sign if you can barely feel them through a heavy layer.
  • Waist: looking down from above, you should see the body narrow behind the ribs.
  • Belly: from the side, the belly should tuck up toward the back legs.

Long-coated dogs can hide all of this, so use your hands as well as your eyes. Obesity was diagnosed in 5.9% of Chihuahuas in one year, at a median age of 4.4 years. Only 1.8% of those under age 2 had the diagnosis, against 9.2% of those over age 7. On a dog this small, a one-pound gain is more than 10% of body weight, so ask your vet to record weight at each visit.

How much should a Chihuahua puppy weigh?

We couldn't find a published week-by-week chart for Chihuahuas alone. Breed charts online are often estimates with no data behind them, so treat them with care. The closest reliable guide is toy-breed growth data, from our puppy weight chart. It groups together all breeds with adults under 14 lbs, so many Chihuahuas will sit toward the low end.

Compare your puppy's own curve over several weeks instead of relying on one weigh-in. Our puppy weight calculator gives an estimated adult weight from their age and current weight. Very small puppies can also develop low blood sugar if they go too long without food, so see how often a puppy should eat.

When do Chihuahuas stop growing?

Mostly by their first birthday. In toy-breed growth data, puppies reach about 90% of adult weight around 10 months and 95% around 12 months, as we explain in when puppies stop growing.

The UK vet records add a detail: Chihuahuas grew fast in their first year but kept gaining some weight up to age 4. That's weight, not necessarily height. The records can't separate muscle from fat, so gains after the first year or two are worth mentioning to your vet. To see what your dog's age means in human years, try our Chihuahua age calculator.

Check for baby teeth too

While you're tracking growth, look in your puppy's mouth. Retained baby teeth were recorded in 11.3% of Chihuahuas under age 2, at a median diagnosis age of 1.6 years. These are baby teeth that haven't fallen out by the time adult teeth come in. If you see two teeth where there should be one, show your vet.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a full-grown Chihuahua weigh?

The AKC show standard is 6 lbs or less. In UK vet records, the median adult weighed 7.5 lbs, with most adults between about 6 and 9.5 lbs. A healthy weight depends on your dog's frame, so ask your vet to assess body condition.

Is 7 pounds big for a Chihuahua?

No. It's just over the AKC show limit, but it's close to the 7.1-lb median for adult females in UK vet records and below the 8.2-lb median for males.

Is a 10-pound Chihuahua overweight?

Not necessarily. About a quarter of adult males in UK vet records weighed more than 10.1 lbs, though it's less common in females. Check your dog's ribs, waist and belly, and ask your vet.

Is 15 pounds big for a Chihuahua?

Yes, that's unusual. Only 3.5% of adult females and 7.3% of adult males in the UK records reached 13.2 lbs or more. Your vet can check whether your dog is carrying extra weight.

Are male Chihuahuas bigger than females?

On average, yes. The median adult male weighed 8.2 lbs and the median adult female 7.1 lbs, though the ranges overlap heavily.

When do Chihuahuas stop growing?

Most of their growth is finished by about 12 months. UK vet records show weight continuing to rise slowly until about age 4, which may not all be growth.
