Greyhound Lifespan: Why Two UK Studies Land Near 11.5 Years

For many breeds, published lifespan numbers disagree by years. Greyhounds are an exception. A 2024 study of UK dogs found a median of 11.5 years, and a separate study of UK vet clinic records found a median age at death of 11.4. That agreement makes 11.5 one of the more solid breed figures we use. The same vet records also point to a problem many owners might not expect in a big, athletic dog: their teeth.

Key takeaways

  • A median of 11.5 years across 3,964 UK Greyhounds (McMillan et al. 2024), against 12.5 for all dogs.
  • A median age at death of 11.4 years in 474 UK Greyhounds in vet records (O'Neill et al. 2019).
  • In those vet records, females lived a median of 11.8 years and males 11.2.
  • Gum disease was recorded in 39.0% of Greyhounds in a single year, against 9.3% reported across all breeds.
  • On the 11.5-year figure, a Greyhound turns senior at about 8.6.

The American Kennel Club range isn't a measured average, but here it sits comfortably around both studies. The oldest Greyhound in the vet records study was 16.5.

Why do the numbers agree so well?

When two studies give very different answers, it's usually because they measured different things in different groups of dogs, as with the Pug, where two studies are almost four years apart. For Greyhounds, two things line up.

  • Most of the dogs had already died. In McMillan's data, 3,025 of the 3,964 Greyhounds had died when the records were collected, about three in four. Across all dogs in the study it was about half. A median can account for dogs still alive, but the more deaths a sample includes, the less the result depends on that estimate.
  • The vet records study is large for one breed. O'Neill et al. (2019) covered 5,419 Greyhounds at 626 UK clinics and recorded 474 deaths. An earlier, smaller study of Greyhounds in English vet clinics had reported 10.8 years.

Both are UK data. American Greyhounds may differ, and we didn't find a comparable US lifespan study.

UK pet Greyhounds averaged 29.7 kg (about 65 lbs) as adults in the vet records study, with males at about 71 lbs and females at about 60, so they're a large breed. They live about two years less than their smaller cousins, the Whippet and Italian Greyhound, and about the same as other large breeds like the German Shepherd at 11.3. You can see every breed in the study in our guide to how long dogs live.

Many pet Greyhounds start as retired racers

In the UK vet records study, the Greyhounds averaged 7.6 years old, while similar studies of Labradors and German Shepherds had median ages under 5. The authors put this down to many Greyhounds coming into pet homes after their racing careers, rather than as puppies. In the UK, they note, most Greyhounds retire from racing between 3 and 5.

The same study found that females outlived males, 11.8 years against 11.2. The authors suggest one possible reason: male Greyhounds may race for longer, with more chance of injury. That's an idea they raise, not something the study tested.

If you adopted your Greyhound as an adult and don't know the exact birthday, ask your adoption group whether one is on file. Otherwise, your vet can give you a best estimate to work from.

What shapes a Greyhound's life

Of 372 deaths in the vet records study with a cause recorded, the most common were:

  • Cancer, 21.5%
  • Collapse, 14.3%
  • Musculoskeletal disorder, 7.8%

A US online survey of owners of 747 retired racing Greyhounds put cancer much higher, at 58% of the 113 deaths reported, with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, the most common type. The two studies used very different methods, and the UK authors note that owner reports can be unreliable, while their own count may have missed some cancers. Either way, cancer is the leading recorded cause in both.

The everyday problems were different. In a single year, the vet records showed:

  • Periodontal (gum) disease, 39.0%: more than four times the 9.3% reported across all breeds in an earlier study
  • Overgrown nails, 11.1%: against 7.1% across all breeds
  • Wounds, 6.2%: the authors link this partly to Greyhounds' thin skin
  • Osteoarthritis, 4.6%: against 2.5% across all breeds

What you can do

  • Look after their teeth. Ask your vet about dental checks and cleanings, and about brushing at home. Bad breath, red gums or dropping food are worth mentioning.
  • Keep nails short. Regular trims help, especially if your dog doesn't wear them down on hard ground.
  • Check their skin after a run. Small cuts are common in this breed and easy to miss under a short coat.
  • Don't ignore a limp. Lameness that doesn't settle is worth a prompt vet visit, and joint stiffness in an older dog is worth raising too.

When is a Greyhound a senior?

At about 8.6, the last 25% of an 11.5-year median lifespan. That's a few months before the 8.9 we use for large dogs in general, as explained in how old is my dog in human years. Our Greyhound age calculator uses that 8.6 as the start of the senior stage. If your Greyhound came to you as an adult, that point may arrive sooner after adoption than you'd expect.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Greyhounds live?

A median of 11.5 years, according to a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs that included 3,964 Greyhounds. A UK vet records study of 474 Greyhound deaths found a median of 11.4 years.

Is 12 old for a Greyhound?

Yes. Twelve is past the median of about 11.5 years. In the UK vet records study, three quarters of Greyhounds had died by about 12.8.

Do female Greyhounds live longer than males?

In UK vet records they did, with a median of 11.8 years for females and 11.2 for males. The study's authors suggest that longer racing careers in males may play a part, but this has not been tested.

What do Greyhounds usually die from?

In UK vet records, the most common recorded causes were cancer (21.5% of deaths with a cause recorded), collapse (14.3%) and musculoskeletal disorders (7.8%). A US owner survey of retired racers reported cancer in 58% of deaths.

When is a Greyhound considered a senior?

From about 8.6 years. That is the last 25% of an 11.5-year median lifespan, which is how AAHA defines the senior stage.
