Cocker Spaniel Lifespan: American vs English Cockers
Cocker Spaniels live a median of 13.3 years, according to a 2024 study of UK dogs. In the US, "Cocker Spaniel" usually means the American Cocker, while most UK research is about the English Cocker. They're separate breeds, so it's fair to ask whether a UK number applies to your dog. In this study, it came out the same for both: 13.3 years.
Key takeaways
- A median of 13.3 years for both American (657 dogs) and English Cocker Spaniels (26,303 dogs) in McMillan et al. (2024), against 12.5 for all dogs.
- All of those dogs lived in the UK, and the American figure rests on a much smaller sample.
- Smaller UK vet-record studies give lower figures, 11.44 and 11.31 years, because they measure something different.
- Female English Cockers died a median of about a year later than males, though the gap wasn't quite statistically significant.
- Gum disease and ear inflammation were the two most common diagnoses in English Cockers.
- On the 13.3-year figure, a Cocker turns senior at about 10, a little later than the 9.4 we use for 20 to 50 lb dogs.
American and English Cockers side by side
| American Cocker Spaniel | English Cocker Spaniel | |
|---|---|---|
| Median lifespan | 13.3 years95% CI 13.0–13.7 | 13.3 years95% CI 13.2–13.3 |
| Dogs in the study | 657, of which 293 had died | 26,303, of which 7,584 had died |
| AKC weight | 20–30 lbs | 26–34 lbs |
| AKC life expectancy | 10–14 years | 12–14 years |
Lifespans are from McMillan et al. (2024), which covered 584,734 UK dogs. Weight and life expectancy ranges are from the American Kennel Club breed profiles.
Two things to keep in mind.
- The American number is less certain. Its confidence interval is wider because it comes from a few hundred dogs, not tens of thousands.
- These are UK dogs. The American Cockers in the study were living in the UK. We haven't found a US study of comparable size for the breed, so this is the best available figure, not a measurement of American pets.
Both breeds are medium dogs by our calculator's 20 to 50 lb band. The English Cockers in a 2023 UK vet-records study had a median adult weight of 15.05 kg (about 33 lbs).
Cockers next to other spaniels
Both Cockers sit with the springer spaniels, above the 12.5-year median for all dogs. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a much smaller toy spaniel, is the clear exception at 11.8. For every breed in the study, see how long dogs live, by breed.
Why you'll also see 11 years
- 11.44 years (median age at death): Engdahl et al. (2023) followed 116 English Cockers that died under UK vet care. Counting only dogs that have already died tends to give a lower figure than a survival-based median.
- 11.31 years (life expectancy at birth): Teng et al. (2022) built a life table from about 1,070 UK Cocker Spaniels that died at vet practices. Life expectancy works like an average, so early deaths pull it down. Their figure for dogs overall was 11.23, so Cockers still came out slightly above average.
The study doesn't say which Cocker breed those dogs were, but in UK records the name usually means the English Cocker. We use 13.3 because it comes from by far the largest sample.
Do female Cockers live longer?
Maybe a little. In the 2023 English Cocker study, the 59 females that died had a median age at death of 12.01 years, against 11.00 for the 57 males. The authors called it "some evidence" of females living longer, because the result (P = 0.052) fell just short of the usual cutoff for statistical significance. With only 116 deaths, we wouldn't plan around it either way.
What comes up as Cockers age
The same study reviewed one year of vet records for 2,318 English Cockers. The most common diagnoses were:
- Periodontal (gum) disease, 20.97%: the authors note this is higher than the 12.5% reported for UK dogs overall, and dental problems became more common with age.
- Otitis externa (ear canal inflammation), 10.09%: against 7.3% for UK dogs overall, as cited by the authors.
- Obesity, 9.88%: more common in females than in males.
Among the 108 deaths with a recorded cause, tumors (9.26%) and other mass-related problems (8.33%) were the most common groups. No single cause accounted for more than about one death in ten.
What you can do
- Make teeth part of every checkup. Gum disease was the single most common diagnosis, and it rose with age. Ask your vet how often your Cocker's teeth should be cleaned.
- Don't wait on ear trouble. Head shaking, scratching at the ears, redness or a smell from the ear are worth a visit.
- Keep your Cocker lean. About 1 in 10 had obesity recorded in a single year. If you train with treats, low-calorie training treats make the daily total easier to manage.
When is a Cocker Spaniel a senior?
At about 10, the last 25% of a 13.3-year median lifespan. That's a little later than the 9.4 we use for medium dogs in general, so a Cocker ages slightly more slowly than a typical 20 to 50 lb dog, as explained in how old is my dog in human years. Our Cocker Spaniel age calculator works for both American and English Cockers.

Frequently asked questions
How long do Cocker Spaniels live?
A median of 13.3 years, according to a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs. That figure was the same for American Cocker Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels, and above the 12.5 years for all dogs.
Do American Cocker Spaniels live as long as English Cockers?
In the 2024 UK study, yes: both had a median of 13.3 years. The English figure comes from 26,303 dogs and the American one from 657, all living in the UK, so the American number is less certain.
Do female Cocker Spaniels live longer than males?
Possibly. In a UK study of 116 English Cockers that died under vet care, females died at a median age of 12.01 years and males at 11.00. The difference was close to, but not quite, statistically significant.
Is 13 old for a Cocker Spaniel?
Yes. Thirteen is about the 13.3-year median, so roughly half of Cocker Spaniels live past it. It's well into the senior stage, which starts at about 10.
When is a Cocker Spaniel considered a senior?
From about 10 years. That is the last 25% of a 13.3-year median lifespan, which is how AAHA defines the senior stage, a little later than the 9.4 we use for 20 to 50 lb dogs in general.
