Miniature Schnauzer Lifespan: The Longest-Lived Schnauzer
Miniature Schnauzers are one of the longer-lived breeds. A 2024 study of UK dog lifespans found a median of 13.3 years: half of the 7,693 Miniature Schnauzers in it lived longer than that. That's almost a year more than the median for dogs overall, and more than either of the bigger Schnauzers. A smaller study of UK vet records found that males and females lived about as long as each other, and that the most common health problems were everyday ones you can do something about.
Key takeaways
- Miniature Schnauzers have a median lifespan of 13.3 years, against 12.5 for dogs overall (McMillan et al. 2024).
- Of the three Schnauzer sizes, the Miniature lives longest: the Standard's median was 13.0 years and the Giant's 12.1.
- Among 86 Miniature Schnauzers that died under UK vet care, males and females both had a median age of 11.6 (O'Neill et al. 2019).
- Gum disease (17.4%) and being overweight (8.3%) were the most common diagnoses, and both were more common in females.
- With a 13.3-year median, a Miniature Schnauzer reaches the senior stage at about 10.

We use 13.3. It comes from 7,693 Miniature Schnauzers, 1,977 of which had died, while the vet records figure rests on 86 deaths recorded at UK practices. The two studies also measure different things: one estimates the age half of all dogs reach, the other takes the middle age of the dogs that happened to die in the records. The vet records study itself notes that a true lifespan figure would need dogs followed from birth to death, which neither study did.
The oldest Miniature Schnauzer in the vet records study died at 17.
Miniature, Standard and Giant Schnauzers compared
The Miniature was bred down from the Standard Schnauzer in the 19th century, and the Giant is the largest of the three. In the 2024 study, their median lifespans lined up by size.
That fits the wider pattern. Across the same study, small purebreds had a median of 12.7 years and large purebreds 11.9. Keep in mind that the Standard and Giant figures rest on far fewer dogs: 826 and 369, against 7,693 Miniatures. The Miniature Schnauzer matches the Yorkshire Terrier, another small breed with a 13.3-year median.
Do male or female Miniature Schnauzers live longer?
In the UK vet records study, there was no real difference. The 42 females that died had a median age of 11.6 years, and so did the 44 males. Across all dogs in the larger 2024 study, females lived slightly longer, 12.7 years against 12.4 for males.
The sexes did differ in other ways in the vet records:
- Size: adult males averaged 10.8 kg (about 24 lbs) and females 9.0 kg (about 20 lbs).
- Females were more often diagnosed with gum disease (19.6% against 15.4%), being overweight (10.2% against 6.4%) and heart murmurs (5.5% against 2.9%).
- Males were more often seen for diarrhea (4.6% against 2.3%) and claw injuries.
The authors noted that some of these differences were small. They're worth knowing, not a reason to choose one sex over the other.
What the vet records show
The 2019 study reviewed a year of vet records for 1,972 Miniature Schnauzers. About two thirds had at least one problem recorded, and the most common were:
- Gum (periodontal) disease: 17.4%
- Overweight or obesity: 8.3%
- Blocked anal glands: 5.8%
- Vomiting: 5.1%
- Outer ear infection: 5.0%
The authors didn't see these as breed weaknesses: the rates of gum disease, excess weight and blocked anal glands were similar to other breeds of this size. They still called dental disease a priority for the breed, because it's so common and can be painful. Among the 75 deaths with a recorded cause, the most common groups were cancer (14.7%), collapse (13.3%), a mass or lump (10.7%) and brain disorders (10.7%). That's a small number of deaths, and the authors said a larger study would be needed.
What you can do
- Look after their teeth. Ask your vet to check them at every visit and tell you when a cleaning makes sense.
- Keep an eye on weight. The AKC lists 11 to 20 lbs for the breed. Your vet can tell you what's right for your dog.
- Watch for scooting and ear scratching. Dragging their bottom along the floor can mean full anal glands, and head shaking or a smelly ear can mean an infection. Both are easy to have checked.
When is a Miniature Schnauzer a senior?
At about 10, the last 25% of a 13.3-year median lifespan. That's a few months after the 9.6 we use for small dogs in general, as explained in how old is my dog in human years. Our Miniature Schnauzer age calculator uses the breed's own lifespan, so a 10-year-old comes out at about 65 in human years.

Frequently asked questions
How long do Miniature Schnauzers live?
A median of 13.3 years, according to a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs that included 7,693 Miniature Schnauzers. The American Kennel Club lists 12 to 15 years.
Do male or female Miniature Schnauzers live longer?
In a UK vet records study, males and females that died both had a median age of 11.6 years. That study included 86 deaths, so it can't rule out a small difference.
Do Miniature Schnauzers live longer than Standard or Giant Schnauzers?
Yes, in a 2024 study of UK dogs. The median was 13.3 years for Miniatures, 13.0 for Standards and 12.1 for Giants.
Is 15 old for a Miniature Schnauzer?
Yes. Fifteen is well past the 13.3-year median and at the top of the American Kennel Club's range. The oldest dog in the UK vet records study died at 17.
When is a Miniature Schnauzer considered a senior?
From about 10 years. That is the last 25% of a 13.3-year median lifespan, which is how AAHA defines the senior stage.
