Miniature Schnauzer Age Calculator

How old is your Miniature Schnauzer
in human years?

Miniature Schnauzers outlive most dogs, and the smallest Schnauzer outlives its bigger cousins. This calculator uses the breed's own lifespan from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs.

Miniature Schnauzer age chart: Mini Schnauzer years to human years

Find your Miniature Schnauzer's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog under 20 lbs, the one the main calculator uses. It turns senior at 9.6, a few months before a Mini Schnauzer's breed-based senior age, so each year after age 2 counts for a little less here: a 10-year-old Mini Schnauzer is about 65 in human years, against 66 for a typical small dog.

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).

When is a Miniature Schnauzer considered a senior?

At about 10 years old. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan rather than a fixed age. A 2024 study of UK dogs put the Miniature Schnauzer's median lifespan at 13.3 years, and 75% of 13.3 is just under 10. That's a few months later than the 9.6 our main calculator uses for dogs under 20 lbs.

Senior doesn't mean sick. It's the stage where vets usually move from yearly to twice-yearly checkups, so changes are caught early. Ask your vet when they'd like to start for your dog.

How long do Miniature Schnauzers live?

Published figures run from about 11.6 to 15 years, depending on what was measured.

We use 13.3 because it comes from far more dogs. We compare the three Schnauzer sizes, and males with females, in Miniature Schnauzer lifespan: the longest-lived Schnauzer.

Teeth and weight in aging Miniature Schnauzers

In the same UK vet records study, gum (periodontal) disease was the most common diagnosis, in 17.4% of Miniature Schnauzers in one year, followed by being overweight, at 8.3%. Both were more common in females. The authors didn't find these rates unusually high for a dog this size, but they called dental care a priority for the breed. Ask about teeth and weight at every checkup.

How we calculate Miniature Schnauzer age

Why does a long-lived breed come out a little younger than the small-dog column? That column turns senior at 9.6, based on the median lifespan of small dogs as a group. A Miniature Schnauzer's measured median is 13.3, a bit longer, so its senior age comes a few months later and each year after 2 adds slightly fewer human years.

Do male or female Miniature Schnauzers live longer?

In a UK study of vet records, males and females that died both had a median age of 11.6 years, with no real difference. That study included only 86 deaths, so it can't rule out a small gap.
