Cocker Spaniel Age Calculator
How old is your Cocker Spaniel
in human years?
American and English Cocker Spaniels share the same median lifespan, and it puts their senior age a little later than the usual one for a medium dog. This calculator uses the breed's own lifespan from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs.

Cocker Spaniel age chart: Cocker years to human years
Find your Cocker's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a 20โ50 lb dog, the one the main calculator uses. It turns senior at 9.4, about seven months before a Cocker's breed-based senior age, so the columns stay close: a 10-year-old Cocker is about 65 in human years, against 67 for a typical medium dog.
| Dog age | Cocker Spaniel | Typical medium dog 20โ50 lbs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 31 | 31 |
| 2 years | 42 | 42 |
| 3 years | 45 | 45 |

| 7 years | 56 | 58 |
| 8 years | 59 | 61 |
| 9 years | 62 | 64 |
| 10 years | 65 | 67 |

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).
When is a Cocker Spaniel considered a senior?
At about 10 years old. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan rather than a fixed age. A 2024 study of UK dogs put the Cocker Spaniel's median lifespan at 13.3 years, and 75% of 13.3 is about 10. That's a little later than the 9.4 our main calculator uses for any 20โ50 lb dog, so a Cocker ages slightly more slowly than a typical medium dog.
Senior doesn't mean sick. It's the stage where vets usually move from yearly to twice-yearly checkups, so changes are caught early. Ask your vet when they'd like to start for your dog.
American or English Cocker: which one is this for?
Both. In the US, "Cocker Spaniel" usually means the American Cocker, the smaller dog with the shorter muzzle and fuller coat. In the UK, where most of the research comes from, it usually means the English Cocker Spaniel. The American Kennel Club registers them as separate breeds.
- American Cocker Spaniel: 13.3-year median lifespan in McMillan et al. (2024), from 657 dogs living in the UK. The AKC lists 20 to 30 lbs and 10 to 14 years.
- English Cocker Spaniel: also a 13.3-year median, from 26,303 dogs in the same study. The AKC lists 26 to 34 lbs and 12 to 14 years.
Because the two medians match, one calculator covers both. The English figure rests on a far bigger sample. The American one comes from a few hundred dogs in the UK, not from American dogs, so treat it as a good guide rather than a final word.
How long do Cocker Spaniels live?
Published figures run from about 10 to 14 years. Each comes from a different measure.
- 13.3 years (median): McMillan et al. (2024) combined records for 584,734 UK dogs. Half of the Cocker Spaniels lived past 13.3 years, for both the American and English breeds. The median for all dogs was 12.5.
- 11.44 years (median age at death): Engdahl et al. (2023) looked at 116 English Cockers that died under UK vet care. Females lived a median of 12.01 years and males 11.00, though the gap fell just short of statistical significance.
- 11.31 years (life expectancy at birth): Teng et al. (2022) built life tables from about 1,070 Cocker Spaniels that died at UK vet practices, slightly above the 11.23 they found for dogs overall.
We use 13.3 because it has the largest sample. We look at what the studies found, and what tends to come up in older Cockers, in Cocker Spaniel lifespan: American vs English, both 13.3 years.
Teeth and ears in aging Cocker Spaniels
In a UK study of vet records for English Cockers, periodontal (gum) disease was the most common diagnosis, affecting 20.97% of the dogs in one year, and dental problems became more common with age. Ear canal inflammation (otitis externa) came next at 10.09%. Ask about teeth at every checkup, and get head shaking, scratching at the ears or a smell from the ear looked at early.
How we calculate Cocker Spaniel age
- First two years: the formula from Wang et al. (2020, Cell Systems), human_age = 16 ร ln(dog_age) + 31, the same for every dog. A 1-year-old Cocker is about 31 in human years and a 2-year-old about 42.
- After age 2: a steady pace set so a Cocker reaches 65 human years when it turns senior at about 10. That's about 2.9 human years per year, against 3.1 for a typical medium dog. It puts a Cocker at the 13.3-year median at about 75, the same point every size reaches at its typical lifespan in our main calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel in human years?
About 51. By the same method, a typical medium dog would be about 51. The chart above shows every age from 1 to 16.
How old is a 10-year-old Cocker Spaniel in human years?
About 65. Ten is about the age when a Cocker Spaniel enters the senior stage.
When is a Cocker Spaniel considered a senior?
From about 10. AAHA treats the last 25% of a dog's expected lifespan as the senior stage, and the median lifespan for Cocker Spaniels is 13.3 years.
How long do Cocker Spaniels live?
A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs found a median lifespan of 13.3 years for both American and English Cocker Spaniels, against 12.5 for all dogs. The American Kennel Club lists 10 to 14 years for the American Cocker and 12 to 14 for the English Cocker.
Does this calculator work for English Cocker Spaniels?
Yes. American and English Cockers had the same 13.3-year median in the 2024 study, so both turn senior at about 10 and add about 2.9 human years per calendar year after age 2.
