Greyhound Age Calculator
How old is your Greyhound
in human years?
Two large UK studies put Greyhounds within a month or two of each other, at 11.4 and 11.5 years. This calculator uses the figure from a 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs, including 3,964 Greyhounds.

Greyhound age chart: Greyhound years to human years
Find your Greyhound's age on the left and read across. The right column is our standard estimate for a dog of 50 to 90 lbs, which turns senior at 8.9. A Greyhound's breed-based senior age is about 8.6, so the columns stay close: a 9-year-old Greyhound is about 66 in human years, against 65 for a typical large dog.
| Dog age | Greyhound | Typical large dog 50โ90 lbs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 31 | 31 |
| 2 years | 42 | 42 |
| 3 years | 46 | 45 |
| 4 years | 49 | 49 |
| 5 years | 52 | 52 |
| 6 years | 56 | 55 |
| 7 years | 59 | 59 |
| 8 years | 63 | 62 |
| 9 years | 66 | 65 |
| 10 years | 70 | 69 |

Shaded cells: senior life stage (the last quarter of expected lifespan, AAHA 2019).
When is a Greyhound considered a senior?
At about 8.6 years. The 2019 AAHA life stage guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog's estimated lifespan, and 75% of the Greyhound's 11.5-year median is 8.6. That's a few months earlier than the 8.9 our main calculator uses for dogs of 50 to 90 lbs.
How long do Greyhounds live?
Unusually for a breed, two large UK studies land almost on the same number.
- 11.5 years (median): McMillan et al. (2024) combined records for 584,734 UK dogs, including 3,964 Greyhounds. The median for all dogs was 12.5. About three in four of the Greyhounds had already died when the data was collected, far more than the roughly half for dogs overall, so less of this figure rests on estimating how long living dogs will last.
- 11.4 years (median age at death): O'Neill et al. (2019) looked at 474 Greyhound deaths in UK vet clinic records. Females lived a median of 11.8 years and males 11.2.
- 10 to 13 years (breed range): the range the American Kennel Club lists. It isn't a measured average.
We look at why the figures agree, and what most often ends a Greyhound's life, in Greyhound lifespan: why two UK studies land near 11.5 years.
If you adopted your Greyhound as an adult
Many pet Greyhounds are retired racers. In the UK vet records study, the Greyhounds averaged 7.6 years old, much older than Labradors or German Shepherds in similar studies, and the authors put that down to many dogs joining pet homes after racing. If you don't know your dog's exact birthday, ask your adoption group whether one is on file, or use your vet's best estimate.
Teeth, nails and skin
In the same UK study, 39.0% of Greyhounds had periodontal (gum) disease recorded in a single year, against 9.3% reported earlier across all breeds. Overgrown nails (11.1%) and wounds (6.2%) were also common. Regular tooth brushing, dental checkups and nail trims are worth building into your routine.
How we calculate Greyhound age
- First two years: the formula from Wang et al. (2020, Cell Systems), human_age = 16 ร ln(dog_age) + 31, the same for every dog. A 1-year-old is about 31 in human years and a 2-year-old about 42.
- After age 2: a steady pace set so a Greyhound reaches 65 human years when it turns senior at about 8.6. That's about 3.5 human years per year, against 3.3 for a typical large dog. It puts a Greyhound at the 11.5-year median at about 75, the same point every size reaches at its typical lifespan in our main calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 5-year-old Greyhound in human years?
About 52. By the same method, a typical large dog would be about 52. The chart above shows every age from 1 to 16.
How old is a 10-year-old Greyhound in human years?
About 70. Ten is past the age of about 8.6 when a Greyhound enters the senior stage.
When is a Greyhound considered a senior?
From about 8.6 years. AAHA treats the last 25% of a dog's expected lifespan as the senior stage, and the median lifespan for Greyhounds is 11.5 years.
How long do Greyhounds live?
A 2024 study of 584,734 UK dogs found a median of 11.5 years across 3,964 Greyhounds. A UK vet records study of 474 deaths found 11.4, and the American Kennel Club lists 10 to 13 years.
Do female Greyhounds live longer than males?
In a UK vet records study they did, with a median of 11.8 years for females and 11.2 for males. The gap was statistically significant.
